I have read extensively about Lincoln's political career and, specifically, his position on the issue of social, political and economic equality for African-Americans. Lincoln was a product of his era and during his political career did not initially believe that African-Americans could be integrated into white society and, therefore, entertained various colonization schemes. As he interacted with educated African-Americans, his beliefs on this controversial issue began to evolve to the point where he could envision such African-Americans participating in American democracy. Had his political career not been cut short by an assassin's bullet, I believe he would have accepted the idea that all African-Americans had a right to full civil, political and social equality. To freeze Lincoln, as it were, in any given stage of his political evolution, as Thomas J. DiLorenzo appears to do, would be scholastically short-sighted.

Please explain the suspension of Habeas corpus to my satisfaction as well as the imprisonment without trial of those who disagreed with Lincoln?

Then explain why men such as Robert E. Lee fought for Virgina but opposed slavery and why 80 percent of the southerners who did not own slaves fought?

Do you think Thomas Jefferson believed in a soveriegn Virgina or not?

Was the formation of West Virginia just?

You may not agree with everything in this book but some things should cause you to pause and think.

[...] He has also been critical of Abraham Lincoln, claiming that slavery could have been eliminated by merely compensating slave owners in exchange for their voluntary emancipation of their slaves. The gall of attacking one of our greatest presidents aside, I wondered where he found support for such a statement. Further research revealed a book, The Real Lincoln, authored by Thomas J. DiLorenzo. Hmmm! the same guy who thinks the Robber Barons were really great guys who should be praised for their wonderful contributions to our society.
